What is hypnotherapy?

Will I be asleep or unconscious?

No. During hypnotherapy, you'll be deeply relaxed while remaining aware of what's happening around you. Many people describe it as the same comfortable, focused state you experience just before falling asleep. It's like being absorbed in a good movie: you know they're actors, but you allow yourself to become immersed in the story.

Is it mind control?

Hypnotherapy is not mind control and is nothing like stage hypnosis, which is designed for entertainment. Clinical hypnotherapy is a therapeutic process where you are always aware, always in control, and able to communicate throughout. Hypnosis works with your own willingness, focus and imagination; you cannot be made to do anything against your values or beliefs.

Can everyone be hypnotised?

Yes. Most people can experience hypnosis, although the depth of the experience can vary from person to person. A hypnotic state is a naturally occurring state you already experience daily, such as daydreaming, or driving somewhere and not consciously remembering every detail of the trip. Will I remember the session?

Some people feel deeply relaxed and absorbed, while others remain more aware of their surroundings. There is no right or wrong way to experience hypnosis. You'll also receive a recording of your session to listen to again and again, helping reinforce the positive suggestions and changes discussed during your session.

How many sessions will I need?

Some people choose an introductory session to explore how hypnotherapy can help, while others benefit from a series of sessions to create and support deeper and lasting change. 4 sessions build strong foundations if your struggle is recent; 8 sessions are recommended when a challenge has been with you for years or feels deeply ingrained. Like building strength at the gym, the mind benefits from repetition and practice: each session builds on the last.

What if my mind is too busy to relax?

That's completely normal. Learning to relax and focus is a skill that develops with practice. In your first session you'll learn techniques to help you get the most from hypnosis, and your daily self-hypnosis practice can help strengthen these skills over time. In fact, people with busy minds often do very well with hypnotherapy because they already have a strong ability to focus, imagine and engage with ideas.

What happens in my first session?

First, we understand you and your story: what's keeping you stuck and where you want to be. You'll learn a self-directed neuroplastic technique to calm your nervous system and develop greater awareness and control. Then we move into a beautifully relaxed hypnotic state for a personalised guided experience tailored to your goals. Afterwards, we discuss your experience, any insights that came up, and the next steps for continuing your progress.

What does hypnotherapy cost in Christchurch?

At Koru Therapies, a 60-minute hypnotherapy session is $145, a 4-session programme is $545 (save $35), and 8 sessions are $1,095 (save $65); pricing is the same whether you attend in-clinic or online. Dry needling and bodywork sessions are $130 (60 min) or $115 (45 min). Gift vouchers are available on request.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Your appointment time is reserved exclusively for you, so we kindly ask for at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule: with 24 hours or more there's no fee; with less than 24 hours, or for missed appointments, the full fee is charged. We understand that genuine emergencies happen, and these will always be considered on a case-by-case basis.
